Company Overview

M. R. Williams, Inc., entered the wholesale food distribution business in April, 1976, through the purchase of Watkins-Sydnor Wholesale Grocers of Henderson, North Carolina.

The business has been operated since 1945, from a small 25,000 square foot warehouse in Henderson. While the company enjoyed a sound base, it was obvious that much needed to be done to become a viable factor in the food distribution business.

The first two years of operation at M. R. Williams, Inc., were devoted to studying the operation, building a management staff, and creating an operational plan to become a major supplier to independent retailers.

In 1978, the company abandoned its manual operations and entered the world of computers. A software package geared toward retail services was developed and well received by the retail customers. Shortly thereafter, the company continued its aggressive approach by adding a retail service department, upgrading its truck fleet from vans to tractor-trailers, increasing its field service personnel and creating new divisions of service merchandising and deli and fountain equipment.

Within five years, the company outgrew its facilities and, in 1981, purchased a much larger warehouse, as well as upgraded its computer department to offer state-of-the-art hardware and software services. An expansion and re-engineering process was again undertaken in 1993, and the company increased the size of its distribution facility by 50%, adding computer powered conveyors, and an additional shipping dock. In 1997, the company doubled the size of its refrigerated storage, positioning itself to continue its aggressive sales expansion.

While business has increased many-fold, the company still remembers those customers who contributed to its growth and pledges its support and resources by continuing to develop programs and services to aid retailers in their growth and profitability.
